The Landscape
In the Province of Lucca, Borgo della Madonnina is close to Celle dei Puccini, one time home of the Puccini family, and the beautiful hill village of Pescaglia, perched at the top of a steep hillside.
Bordered by the forested Appenines to the east and the Apuan Alps to the west, the Garfagnana area is one of alpine meadows, lush hills, rivers and gorges, making it ideal for walking and hiking.
The Area
The Medieval and Renaissance, walled city of Lucca is only 18 kilometres away, while Pisa (45 minutes) and Florence (75 minutes) are close enough for day trips.
The smart beach resorts of Forte dei Marmi, Lido di Camaiore and Viareggio are only a short (45 minutes), but stunning drive across the Apuan Alps.
The historic, hilltop cathedral town of Barga (20 minutes) and Puccini’s favourite Torre del Lago (45 minutes) have wonderful music and opera festivals throughout the spring and summer.
